Creative Emergence Substack

The things that women reclaim are often their own voice, their own values, their imagination, their clairvoyance, their stories, their ancient memories. If we go for the deeper, and the darker, and the less known we will touch the bones.
— Clarissa Pinkola Estés, Women Who Run With the Wolves

reclaim(v.)

Early 14c., reclaimen, "call back a hawk to the glove," from Old French réclamer "to call upon, invoke; claim; seduce; to call back a hawk"

  • The word philanthropy comes from Ancient Greek philanthrōpía, meaning love of humanity.

It is a compound of the Greek philo (“loving”) and anthrōpos ("human being".) The concept anchors my personal philosophy and has been a connecting thread throughout the weaving of my life:

    • Child of philanthropy: raised on farmland owned by art philanthropist & painter Evelyn Bartlett.

    • College education made possible through philanthropic funding: Kathryn Bradford scholarship, Chancellor’s Tuition Scholarship.

    • Early career roots in 501 (c)3 fundraising, PR & membership (Rockport Art Association, Providence Children’s Museum, & Rhode Island Foundation)

    • 4 years assisting nonprofit capacity building through leadership development, fundraising development, organizational development & grant review via the Initiative for Nonprofit Excellence at the Rhode Island Foundation

    • Successfully funded 3 independent Kickstarter campaigns for creative community initiatives

    • Percentages of art sales have been contributed to philanthropic causes since 2010- organizations include APlomb Project, Direct Action for Rights & Equality, Inc., Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, Pollinator Protection Project, Save the Bay, Western Society of Naturalist, Wildlife SOS, 1% for the Planet; over 750 trees have been planted through art via OneTree Planeted since 2020.
